We had over 110 competitors from four different clubs competing for the (awesome!) medals up for grabs in the two events of self-defence demonstration and kumi-uchi sparring. It was a true pleasure to see the results of all that training on display. Each year the skills and spirit shown by all our members increases. The individual and paired performances were stand-out from the youngest of the juniors (5 years old) to the seniors in their 40's who showed some of the young pups a thing or two.

Sensei David and myself are more than proud of all the competitors who made our annual Ju-Jutsu 'big day out' such a wonderful success as well as the devoted parents who got our juniors there and the awesome volunteers who made the day flow so well. Somehow a box of roses chockies just seems token next to the mammoth effort put in by you guys. Special mention must go to Paul and his team of volunteers for his/their work behind the scenes and to Tom (the basketball coach) working with us to get the timing right. Without the happy and willing cooperation of these guys I can honestly say this year's competition would not have gone ahead. I can't finish with the thank-you's without a HUGE thank-you to my gorgeous and brainy partner, Tammy. If you have watched these events over the years you will have seen it is more than obvious who the brains of the outfit is.

However, the BEST thing I can say about this competition, and the thing I am most proud of is what was pointed out to me by several people who have trained in different martial arts. Our competition is the friendly competition, with egos on hold, animosity at a minimum and everyone there seeing friends past, present and future, not “we gotta beat those so-and-so’s” or “that ref must be BLIND”. This is really heart-warming to me as it is something I have worked very hard on. The purpose of this competition has always been and will always be to increase people’s enjoyment and skills in Ju-Jutsu. At the end of the day, we want everyone to go home knowing they have had a great day and they can’t wait ‘till next year’s.

Even though this comp is now one of the biggest, best organised friendliest and safest competitions in Queensland (not just in Ju-Jutsu but in martial arts in general), be assured we won’t be resting on our laurels. We have identified areas for improvement and are already working to make sure these improvements are made so that each year we can raise the benchmark and say THAT was our best comp so far!

OSU!

Peter Hills, 5th Dan, Aiki Kenpo Ju-Jutsu

You can find video of the competition here: http://www.youtube.com/user/cyclonedojo?feature=mhee

And here: http://www.youtube.com/user/AussieRay1991

<sites:pageName>competition</sites:pageName><sites:revision>3</sites:revision>

International Budo Federation (IBF)

Big news!!

The International Budo Federation (IBF) is a multi-style martial arts organisation with branches in over 30 countries. The clubs represented were Arana Hills, Northlakes and Mount Gravatt and all of them put in excellent performances. These three clubs are sister clubs in this style of Ju-Jutsu and it was wonderful to see the cammeraderie between representatives of all three clubs.

Arana Hills came away with the lion’s share of the medals but special mention must be made of the mighty effort from the Northlakes club. With only 15 competitors, they came away with 19 of the medals. It was a similar story with the (as always!) strong contingent from Mount Gravatt, bringing 26 competitors to come away with 25 of the medals.

The two forms of competition were Kumite (sparring) and Goshin (self-defence). In this part of the world, it is the only competition of it’s type and shows the flexibility of the art of Ju-Jutsu. Those who stayed for all of the divisions saw some UNBELIEVABLE demonstrations of Ju-Jutsu skills in both these events. Every year just gets better and better. Don’t worry if you missed out on some of it. You can go to the cyclonedojo Youtube channel at: http://www.youtube.com/user/cyclonedojo?feature=mhum and access some good videos from there. We haven’t got all the good stuff up; some of it we don’t have footage of and also it should be noted we don’t post direct footage of other’s children without express permission. Pictures are also available to view in an online album from one of the Mt. Gravatt members (thanks for that!). If you have some movies or photos that you would like to get to us or post yourself (please let us know the link!), please feel free to do so.

An absolutely HUGE and heartfelt thanks to all the competitors, officials and (never forget) the mums and dads who make this competition possible every year. The purpose of this comp. has always been and will always be to bring together the traditional Ju-Jutsu enthusiasts to show world-class Ju-Jutsu skills AND to provide a family-friendly great day out for the kids. None of that is possible without the support of our members and so once again, THANK YOU!

Next year we will have members from even more like-minded Ju-Jutsu clubs and people will be training even harder to out-do the 2010 performances...I can’t wait!

Sensei Peter Hills, 4th Dan, Koryukan Aiki Kenpo Ju-Jutsu
email: peterhills867@hotmail.com
ph: 0400119340

<sites:pageName>2010cyclonedojoju-jutsucompetitionagreatsuccess</sites:pageName><sites:revision>1</sites:revision>
